Frequently Asked Questions about The BCS Kids' Chess Server

Please read these instructions carefully before using the Chess Server. We have designed this server to be the most kid-friendly and child-appropriate chess on the internet. There are no inappropriate screen names and no chat feature.

Step One: After clicking the Play Chess button below you will get a screen asking for your email address and password.

Just type anything in the password box and it will work. (Since we are in beta-test mode this summer, no passwords are necessary at this time.)

The email box is very important. First of all, entering the email address will allow us to send you each completed game you play. This is good for you to analyze your games with your chess teacher or show your parents. Second, during the summer test period, the emails will help us ask once or twice for feedback among those using the site.

Step Two: After clicking on PLAY CHESS and then entering any password and your email address, a chessboard will appear. This may take a few seconds, even if you have a fast connection to the internet.

The most important button on the screen is the FIND OPPONENT button. If you don't click this, nothing will happen! Always remember that if you want to play a game, you must click FIND OPPONENT. Having said that, it isn't necessary to click the button more than once. You will be matched up with the first available opponent.

This brings us to the next most important feature. You are allowed to change the settings for Time Control, Skill Level, and Color Choice. However, if you do change these from the automatic settings, you may have a longer wait to play a game. This is especially true in the summer. Most BCS students will not find out about this server until September! It is recommended that you do not change these settings unless many people seem to be online at once.

Step Three: After your opponent has been found, you are playing a game of chess!

There are two important things to know:

First, to castle you drag your king two squares towards the direction you want to castle. All other rules for castling apply.

Second, if your opponent runs out of time you don't automatically win. You must click the Call Flag button first. This is exactly the same rule in effect when you play someone in an official tournament face-to-face. It's good practice.

If you find any problems with the server, try to describe what happened and email it to our office. Also, if you ever run into other serious problems, you should exit your browser and restart it.
